Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art through the aunt Denise. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theatre. DuVernay immediately was captivated with that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Although DuVernay lived in Compton with her family, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma be the inspiration for her later a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was in college when she started to get attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of a jury member's home. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
